Home Theaters & Austin Texas Media Rooms

Austin home owners look for home theater systems that will make staying home to watch a movie more enjoyable than going out. Many turn to high-end stores in the hopes that state of the art equipment alone will produce this experience. Getting this equipment to work, however, calls for more than superior design and electronics know-how. It requires an understanding of home architecture and room acoustics, and how these environmental factors play a pivotal role in shaping the sound qualities of the system.

ILD offers the eclectic Austinite more than simple equipment sales. Our audio video services process, partnerships with major US manufacturers, and customized installation services are the things that differentiate us as a one-source sales and service vendor in home theater, home lighting and system control, and home automation technologies.

We begin our process with an on site meeting in the client’s home. There, we examine home’s interior architecture to determine which room in the house offers the best possible location for a home theater system. Most custom homes in Austin range from 10,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet. Each room in such a large house is highly unique and has its own specific acoustical qualities that must be thoroughly understood first. A simple knowledge of home wiring and electronics is not sufficient to pinpoint these dynamics. This is why so many third party installers of home theaters, though highly skilled as electricians, often fail to tune a home theater to its maximum yield potential.

It is not a matter of skill or intelligence; it is simply a matter of separate disciplines. Acoustics is a function of architecture, not electronics, and only a design like ours that has partnered with major custom home builders throughout Texas normally possesses these skills. If Illuminations Lighting Design cannot assess the acoustics through analysis of interior home structure, we will even go so far as to meet with the architect or builder to gather this data. There is no cost for this additional consultation, either.

Once we have located the room and analyzed its acoustics, we then choose the appropriate of projector, screen, audio processor, video processor, amplifier, and speakers for the new home theater system integration. While these components are standard to almost all home entertainment systems and available at a number of retail stores throughout Austin, our components come directly from the manufacturers and are rated at the highest level of specification grade quality. Our expertise in home wiring then allows us to install the equipment ourselves without having to subcontract third party entities. We can even integrate a home theater system into the home’s lighting control system, or go one step further and install it as one of many subsystems on a home automation network.

This level of integration and ultra-modern convenience results in a much better sound quality than retail equipment or even public cinemas normally provide. If you are going to a substantial investment in a home theater, why not do it with a team of specialists who can customize every aspect of the system to your residence and personal lifestyle, and who can also personalize it with controls and automation options that make it intuitive and user friendly for everything from family gatherings to formal parties and special occasions?

Illuminations Lighting Design is a full service design build firm specializing in residential and commercial indoor lighting and outdoor lighting, electrical service and maintenance as well as home automation, home theaters, emergency generators, surge protection systems, phone systems and lighting control systems.

Home System Integration

Why is home system integration necessary?
Today’s large, custom homes feature complex floor plans and
sophisticated electrical systems that makes it all but impossible to conveniently control the many sub systems within a home from multiple access points. The sheer size of some homes precludes the convenience that smaller homes offer of having all controls located in the kitchen or living room. Eclectic architecture and advanced electronics require a central controller with a variety of touch panel and remote controls that give the homeowner access to lighting, climate control, security, and audio visual equipment from any point in the house, at any time.

AMX home system integration combines the benefits of technology with the convenience of human thought and command and brings a number of unique, specific benefits to today’s eclectic homeowner.

How does home system integration control audio/visual equipment?
ILD
home lighting control and electrical specialists install AMX touch panels throughout the home, creating multiple zones of distributed audio and video. This creates separate, customized A/V environments, each one of which is unique to a particular area of the home. In the living room, for example, we can program audio distribution feeds to play soft music in the background of conversation. In the home theater, we can program the system to supplement the score and/or soundtrack of the movie with appropriate background music. For parties and celebrations, we can program the system to play music from a particular era, or music of a particular type favored by the majority of the guests.

How can AMX home system integration make my home more secure?
By combining the ability to see an approaching stranger, dialogue with the stranger from a point of safety, allow/disallow access to the home, and notify authorities if necessary. ILD can configure the system to automatically control shades, doors, and gates at certain times of the day and night. Security camera surveillance monitors the property and alerts you when someone approaches the front gate. The phone system can be linked to the intercom to allow the homeowner to question the visitor before deciding whether or not to grant access. One touch control panels placed in secure areas of the home can either be used to grant access or notify authorities to the presence of an intruder.

This is all well and good, but I travel too much to make much use of this convenience.
AMX home system integration is built with the travelling homeowner or owner of multiple houses foremost in mind. You can access any residence remotely over the Internet to communicate directly with their AMX technology. When you are travelling, you can log in and monitor their home from a hotel or a laptop with Wi-Fi connectivity. If you own more than one house you can manage all of your properties throughout the day through this technology.

Does home system integration offer control over home lighting?
Yes. We can set your system up so that the same set of lighting fixtures can generate very different lighting levels and effects with AMX controllers. Everything from relaxed evening lighting, romantic mood lighting, and bright lights for family gatherings and celebrations can be accessed with one touch convenience.

Can I control my HVAC system through home system integration controls?
You can either control HVAC operations directly or have the system automate its activities for maximum efficiency. AMX home system integration allows homeowners to do exactly that. ILD professionals can pre-program the system with settings that reflect individual preferences in temperature and ventilation. Different settings can be created for different rooms of the house, keeping costs at a minimum in rooms that are used less frequently than others. The system can also monitor each room in the home and make sure that the desired temperature is maintained.

What can you tell me about your lighting design firm?

Specialized Texas Electrical Services

Truly effective Texas electrical service requires much more than simple wiring and electricity. Today’s houses and buildings are so much more sophisticated than they were in the past; featuring more elaborate floor plans, more space consolidation, automated wiring and more custom interior architecture.

When you find yourself facing a basic or minor electrical problem, more than likely you would want to work with a local company in your area. It is usually more cost effective to go with someone within your own community who can be there on the same day or the day after, and who can show you a great deal of personal attention.

However, more extensive and complex services like whole house surge suppression, power backup, new home wiring and electrical emergency generator installation, often demand that small, local Texas electrical service companies call upon Houston-based Illuminations Lighting and Design to add their expertise, personnel, and training in a team work capacity to deliver a comprehensive solution to the eclectic Texas homeowner.

More advanced electrical service work that may not be available in your area can be obtained for larger projects by contacting ILD directly. The following represents just a few of the major project services we offer to large estates and custom homes throughout the Houston area and Texas Hill Country.

Electrical Home Remodeling
Surge Suppressors, Backup Power, and Electrical Generators
Your electrical service could be interrupted by any number of causes, chief among which are severe weather conditions unique to both Central Texas and the Texas Gulf Coast Region.

All along the Texas Coast, Houston, Beaumont, Galveston County are hit every year by tropical storms. At other times, we are hit by full force hurricanes. Residents of Austin, Texas, San Antonio, Brenham, TX, La Grange, Columbus, and Bastrop, Texas at times get struck by violent thunderstorms and hail, and many times face the threat of tornadoes.

Every house in Texas should be protected by multiple ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI).
A GFCI is a vital safety component that protects children and pets in much the same way that a circuit breaker or fuse protects the circuit panel. If the wire becomes frayed or gets wet, this can cause the power to suddenly spike. When a spike occurs, the GFCI immediately senses the upsurge and shuts down the circuit, thus minimizing the treat of electrocution.

Any time the power goes out completely in a neighborhood or small town in Texas, electrical service may not be immediately available due to inclement weather. In such an instance, having a commercial grade, dependable generator for emergency power can keep you in touch with the world and maintain the basic power requirements of your home until the power is restored.

Custom homeowners in Texas should strongly consider contacting a specialty electrical service firm like ILD to install a whole house surge suppression system. This will safeguard their investment in their home lighting systems and controls. Extremely remote locations often experience spikes in electrical service that can blow out circuits and electronic equipment in the home.

Again, this service proves to be of immense benefits to both Gulf Coast clients and Hill Country Clients alike. Everything from hurricanes and tropical storms to tornadoes and thunderstorms with hail can strike down power lines and send surges of high voltage straight into homes. By protecting your house with surge suppression, you can weather the storm without having to replace entire systems when the rains clear.

Advanced Electrical Services: Custom Home Wiring, Lighting Control, and Home Automation
Even the best Texas electrical service professionals often require training in skill sets beyond the boundaries of standard electrical work. Today’s home theater systems, whole house audio systems, and advanced home security controls require advanced knowledge of computers, security controls, lighting control software, and home theater components that can only be gained through cross training and partnerships with specialists who are familiar with these disciplines.

This is where Illuminations Lighting outshines its competition in advanced electrical services to Texas homeowners with eclectic tastes and highly customized home architecture. Our electric service professionals cross train and partner with our lighting control and home automation services, combining two divisions into one solid team when exceptional delivery power is required in the field.

Regardless of whether you need a new home theater, a Vantage control software upgrade, Lutron wallbox dimmers, or a Radio RA wireless lighting control system, you can depend Texas electrical service technicians and lighting design experts to lay the strongest possible foundation of service and functionality for any home networking, entertainment, or command control objectives your preference and lifestyle requires.

Illuminations Lighting and Design is a full-service vendor of Texas electrical service work, commercial and home lighting design, fine art lighting and lighting control and automation systems. Most of our electrical service work is concentrated in the area between Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. Occasionally we go as far north as Dallas and Fort Worth for major projects, and we work nationwide as a lighting design and electrical service contractor for high-end lighting projects at resorts, hotels, country clubs, and exclusive restaurants.

Call us today for a free consultation at 1-800-863-1184. Consultants are standing by to assist your with any custom project in Texas.

Interactive media design transforms mass media into home-based personalized communications, audio, video, and information systems.

In one sense, interactive media design reverses the information age, where machines feed content to the Mind of Man. With interactive media design, it is different. Home automation connects the human mind to a computer network that links all home subsystems together into a command center of audio visual feeds and push button convenience.

It sounds simple, and it really is, at least from the end user’s perspective. Interactive media design links every lifestyle element together into a central computer that is programmed with multiple subroutines containing embedded algorithms that regulate everything from climate control to home theater and home security to audio and video feeds. Interactive media design touch panels installed on walls and hand-held wireless remotes allow anyone familiar with a few basic command sequences to activate the most advanced electrical design and lighting technology available on today’s market.

No two of these systems are identical. We design interactive media systems custom to the client’s home environment, daily lifestyle, and personal desires. As we receive increasing numbers of calls daily from inquirers wanting to know more about our services, we decided to post a few of our question/answer sessions for quick reference.

Q: If media refers to broadcast information, how can you say home automation is actually a form of interactive media design?

A: Actually it is the other way around. Home automation is any computer-driven network that operates on a series of embedded commands that operate various home sub systems and network. Home automation itself is combination electrical design and computer programming. Interactive media design extends home automation control and interface to audio and video devices so that information can be sent back to the person and not just from the person.

Q: What elements of home media does interactive design tie together?

A: Essentially, interactive media unites the phone system, indoor television with outdoor security cameras and gate access control. We also tie our home automation section in with the HVAC system, allowing a homeowner to regulate the temperature even while traveling on the road. HVAC controls can be turned on and off at will whenever!

Q: Is interactive media designed provide updates, weather reports, and entertainment like traditional meda?

A: It can be. Our home theater customers enjoy one-touch control of music and video anytime they want to watch their favorite movie with background music. We have been asked on occasions to link computers and flat panels together, thus uniting TV and Internet for a client so they can watch satellite TV feeds through DSL or cable. This is rare, but we do get these requests at times.

Q: How extensively does interactive media design depend on the Internet? What if DSL goes down?

A: Interactive media does not depend on the Internet at all. The Internet is only one of many tools that clients can use to control the system. The central computer controls indoor and landscape lighting and the HVAC system. Homeowners can log into their home automation network and turn the lights on and off and control climate within the home while online. If your DSL or Cable goes down, your home automation system will still work, as the backbone of this system is the sophisticated electrical designing and programming, not the home computer.

Home Theater Lighting is a major component of any upscale media room.

Home Theater Lighting creates an ambient environment that motivates friends and family to come to a private residence for a superior movie-going experience. Home theater lighting and automation, when done correctly, not only equals the quality of public cinema, but in many respects exceeds it. Home theater lighting accommodates direct control of lighting intensity so the host can dim the room to levels optimal for movie viewing. Sufficient task and accent lighting must remain on to some degree, however, so guests can move freely in and out the room without hazard or inconvenience. This skillful blend of light and darkness takes an expert home automation team like the one that makes Illuminations Lighting and Design a leader in home theater equipment and customization.

First and foremost to any home theater lighting job is direct remote control over the lighting levels and multiple lighting themes we program into a home automation lighting system. We link an AMX hand-held remote to both the audiovisual equipment and the lighting control system superstructure. When the host hits play, a pre-programmed timer begins to dim the lights as the movie credits begin to roll. This emulates the dimmable lights of theater that focus attention on the screen and set the mood for an altered state of reality. At the same time, it offers personal control and customization that public cinemas do not provide. Based on the size of the room, the type of projector used, and the overall layout of furniture and decorations, home theater lighting specialists pre-program multiple themes into the home theater system that allow the host to not only choose the amount of time it takes to dim the lights, but also offers a variety of individual light levels and effects that compliment the genre and theme of the specific movie the guests have come to enjoy.

Home theater lighting depends on layers of specific types of illumination in order to out compete the major cinemas. Colored lighting triggers emotion on an unconscious level and can transform the white light of normal illumination into a mood-altering compliment to the nature and theme of the film. This is a very subtle effect that guests seldom consciously notice but unconsciously respond to with a desire to "come back again next week." Dimmable lights generate optimal, low lighting for home theaters that focuses attention away from an obscured environment directly onto the projections screen—just as the lights in a cinema do. ILD dimmable lighting offers more versatility, however, than public cinema lighting because home automation systems contain a memory feature that allows us to pre-program any number of lighting levels and themes, each with its own preset timing control. We can then link this to indirect lighting sources that use very low levels of light reflected from key points in the room to create an aura of specific colors and luminosity that compliments both the room and the feature film. With thousands of lamps, luminaries, and fixtures for specialty lighting from which we can choose, we can automate and control necessary illumination with an aesthetic flare that enhances the decorative and special effects that make home theater lighting a prime motivation to stay indoors over the weekend. The home theater lighting system will also keep specific task lights powered on at low levels so guests can leave the room if necessary. We overlay these lighting effects in such a way as to create a sense of total darkness when in reality there is always enough light where it needs to be to accommodate safe movement and special effects.

Every home theater lighting design must also be customized to the personality and lifestyle of the client and properly illuminate the physical floor plan and interior architecture of the audio/visual room itself. In order to guarantee that we can truly deliver a custom solution to every client who comes to us, we have spent many years building relationships with the world's leading manufacturers of home automation controls, task lighting, accent lighting, and decorative lighting equipment. With access to specialties like ceiling lights and wall mounted lights for indirect lighting, we can create an aesthetic that goes beyond the public domain. Call us today at 713-863-1133 to host the next grand opening at your home and amaze your guests with an experience never to be forgotten!

Comparing HDTV 1080p and HDTV 1080i formats.

The latest hype in High Definition world seems to be about the new 1080p HDTV's. Lets a step back and see what 1080i and 1080p really means. On the surface there is no difference. They are identical in their resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The difference comes under the hood, even though they both display the same resolution, 1080i refreshes screen in an interlaced manner, odd horizontal lines first and then even horizontal lines. This is all done at the refresh rate of a particular TV, normally 1/30 of a second. 1080p on the other hand refreshes the screen all at once. Hence the "i" stands for interlaced and "p" stands for progressive.

1080p in theory is considered better then 1080i because of its ability to refresh in a progressive manner, thus having a name of "Ultra-HD" or "Full HD". The ability to refresh screens at once makes for a crisp clean image, which is preferred for images in motion, like sports and fast action movies.

Having said this, the next question that comes to mind is what content is available in true 1080p format. And the answer to that question is: None. All the programming provided by cable or satellite companies is either in 1080i or 720p format. HD-DVD, Blu-Ray and Sony Playstation 3 are capable of outputting 1080p.

So why get 1080p?

Given the size increases in LCD and Plasmas, ranging from 13" to 101" from
quality manufacturer's like Samsung, LG, Sony, Runco and Marantz, the extra level of refresh rate will make a difference between a pixilated image and a clean smooth image once the 50" threshold is crossed. 1080p is currently the digital standard for filming digital motion pictures. Directors such as George Lucas shoot their digital films in this high definition mode to be shown in home theaters equipped with 1080p equipment.

Why not let the
home automation experts at Illuminations Lighting Design assist you with your home theater, surround sound, or HDTV plasma needs. They can be reached toll free at 800-863-1184 or online at www.illuminationslighting.com.

Illuminations Lighting Design celebrates 25 years as pioneers in the lighting business!

Founded by Tom Kretzschmar and Jim Stephens back in 1980, Illuminations Lighting Design was formed as a subsidiary of Rulon Electric Company to focus on the art of lighting.

Tom became interested in the idea of specialty lighting and saw its potential in the Houston area, especially among customers of the family business. His grandfather, Eldred Otis Rulon, at the end of World War II, started the electrical service company that bears his name, catering to the city's upper economic echelon. Tom's father, Gary, who had married Otis's daughter, May Lee, was eventually handed the reigns of the business and set it on a path of aggressive growth.

After attending Southwest Texas State University and joining the family business, he met Jim Stephens who also had an interest in lighting. Stephens had taught theatrical lighting design at Syracuse University and later was head lighting designer at the famous Alley Theater in Houston. After his career with the Alley, he and Kretzschmar teamed up to created what is now know today as Illuminations Lighting Design.

As a unique two man team, Tom and Jim, quickly honed their skills and created a growing list of loyal clients who appreciated their passion for lighting. Interestingly, twenty five years later, with a staff of 45, Illuminations Lighting Design is still the only game in town doing what is does and is the largest as well. This includes almost everything related to lighting, encompassing consulting, designing, installations, sales and maintenance for interior, exterior landscape lighting as well as home automation services.

To continue the dream and expand the company services, new design and engineering talent has been added to the war chest of talent at Illuminations. Rick Luberger heads the Landscape Lighting division of the company. Louis Torregrossa, master electrician, heads the Electrical Division of the firm. Tom Kretzschmar continues to be a driving force behind the synergy of talent and maintain contact with their precious list of loyal customers.

Illuminations Lighting Design has evolved into a "one stop shop" for everything electrical in your home or office. Our clients live mostly in River Oaks, West University and Memorial and a few other upper end neighborhoods. They also extend to commercial developments and private homes such as Wyoming ranches, Colorado resorts, New Mexico retreats, Oklahoma mansions, Louisiana plantations, and New York lofts to name a few.

AMX Control Systems now available at Illuminations Lighting Design - Houston

AMX is all about making your life and your environment easier to control and manage. AMX user interfaces talk with the central controllers which interact with device controllers. Simply put, just push a button and say "WOW."

Simplify Your Life
At work. At play. AMX Corporation incorporates one-touch control solutions to make business and home the perfect blends of technology and simplicity. Since its inception in 1982, AMX has led the industry with innovative control system products - sophisticated technology designed to be easy to use and understand. The company's strategy includes working with leading manufacturers, dealers and distributors to develop powerful control systems that successfully integrate and automate literally thousands of electronic devices. It's Your World.

A typical AMX integrated system consists of four components: user interfaces, central controllers, communications and integration software, and controlled devices.

User interfaces, which allow the user to control the system, can be as simple as a wireless remote, or as sophisticated as a color touch panel. AMX user interfaces come in a variety of shapes and sizes to best match the needs of their users.

Central controllers are the components that tie together the various devices controlled by the system. They are integrated invisibly into the system environment to do the work "behind the scenes."

The third component, communications and integration software, runs inside the central controllers and acts as the "brain" between the user and the system components.

The final component, the controlled devices, are simply put any equipment connected to the system that the user wishes to operate. Controlled devices can include communications devices, such as telephones, intercom systems, and computers; environmental devices, such as lights, thermostats, security systems, and window treatments; and audio/visual devices, such as televisions, VCRs, DVDs, cameras, and satellite systems.

In homes all over the world, you'll find AMX technology making life easier, increasing efficiency and generally making life more fun and exciting. AMX systems can automate home theaters, lighting, security systems, HVAC systems, communication devices and more. The only limitation is your imagination!
