Until recently, public cinema held second place only to concert halls in acoustical depth and variety. Because a cinema’s acoustical media is designed with speakers positioned both above and around the audience, (as well as underneath and on each side of the screen) different sounds emanate from different points in the room. Dialogue flows from the speakers in front of the screen to mimic real life speech. Sounds emanating from the surrounding set come from speakers positioned along walls and ceilings, creating the illusion that audience members are actually within the movie along side of the characters. Effective home theater acoustics require advanced, formal training in architectural theory and the acoustical qualities of specific construction materials.
