Formal Living Room Lighting
No matter how innovative and personal custom home architecture becomes, formality will never go out of style. Its rich display of elegance, combined with a tangible sense of conservative self-containment, epitomizes the sensibilities of many who have pursued success as a means to a more sublime and beautiful life, and not as an end unto itself. It is this blend of the sublime and the beautiful, as Edmund Burke would say, that characterizes the aesthetic of formal living room lighting. We call it the "Art of Light".
As with all forms of luxury home interior lighting, it is very important to treat this discipline as a form of interior design in its own right. Living rooms are places where homeowners spend a great deal of their time. Décor, furniture, fine art, and media are intricately arranged in patterns of geometry and color that reflect the personal lifestyle of the residents. Houston interior designers have to develop strategies of bringing individual room contents into an aesthetic unity that supports both activity and desired states of emotion.
This unity, in turn, must be supported in a formal living room lighting design that supports the purposes and forms of that particular interior space. This requires our team to use many different types of lighting fixtures to achieve our aims. Layers of light are placed in the room to support interior architecture, color schemes, and human activity. There are also specialty forms of lighting that accent the more noticeably unique features of room décor.
Respect for interior room architecture is foundational to our approach to custom home lighting systems. By first understanding room layout, dimension, and structural motif, we can create the foundational layer of formal living room lighting. This layer emphasizes the upper part of the room and the corners in a way that makes it appear appropriately filled with balanced illumination in all places. Vaulted ceilings, if present, may be accented by sophisticated LED cove lights that operate with minimal heat and power consumption.
Once the architectural highlights have been established, general room lighting can be created with any number of fixture types. Some fixtures used in formal living room lighting, such as chandeliers, wall sconces, and ornamental lamps, are meant to be seen as decorative elements in their own respect. Other fixtures are not meant to be seen. Their purpose is to create visibility without drawing attention to themselves.
Typically, we blend the use of both fixtures types whenever we work in a custom home setting. Places in the room where a new decorative element would complete the aesthetic can be occupied by decorative fixtures. Other places, such as sitting rooms with highly aesthetic elements should be made more clearly visible by concealed lights.
Formal living room lighting also requires considerable accent lighting in places and artwork lighting in others. Many homeowners have at least one display cabinet of some form or another located in the living room. Special lights should be installed in these cabinets to draw appropriate attention to their contents.
Wall space can be accented in two ways. Empty wall space can be filled with decorative sconces that correlate to other elements of interior décor. Fine art can be illuminated with proprietary, concealed projectors that make the painting look illuminated from within.
Home lighting controls are then installed that allow residents to manipulate layers of light, along with individual lights, with user friendly hand-held remotes.
