Exterior Landscape Lighting

 The purpose of exterior landscape lighting is twofold.  It must illuminate the livable space of the entire property, and it must magnify the supreme importance of the home as the focal point of landscape design.  As such, the first step is to appropriately illuminate the home façade, exterior structure, and interior to exterior lighting in order to properly establish its importance to the scene.

At this point, it becomes necessary to start illuminating a number of landscape elements, zones of interests, and outdoor structures.  Multiple layers of light will be needed for this task, along with a wide range of energy efficient fixture types.

The ultimate goal of Houston landscape design is to create an illuminated realm of personal lifestyle centered on the house and extended to all four corners of the lot.  As the support of the home itself is the first principle of exterior landscape lighting, we normally begin with the illumination of various types of vertical impact that surround the home and work to visually enhance its presence.

This layer of light takes the form of tree lighting, illumination of tree walls and hedgerows, and the lighting of masonry walls that add dimension to various points of both front and back yards.  A number of up lights and down lights are used to accomplish this step in our services.

Next, we expand this theme outward by illuminating transit areas that connect the home to varying points of interest in both the front and back yard.  These transit areas are either walkways or pathways that can lead to any other point on the property, and which require sufficient outdoor lighting to provide clear visibility to people walking along them at night.

Next, we begin to pinpoint various landscape elements and zones of interest to further the custom exterior landscape lighting design for that particular property.  Garden lighting is top priority in this stage of our work.

There are so many garden types, ranging from entry gardens that transition front yard space to back yard space, to formal, custom, and meditative spaces.  Each garden type, and even certain garden species, must be treated with acute sensitivity to both individual form and relationship to other forms.

Certain hardscape elements also represent a high priority to exterior landscape lighting contractors.  Among the two most common are swimming pools with custom patios and patios designed to meet a variety of social and decorative requirements.

A combination of general lighting, decorative lighting, and sometimes mood lighting is used in these areas to create a functional layer of light that supports human activity and also works to create desired emotional states requisite for the full enjoyment of those activities.

Such mindsets as conviviality, romance, festivity, and spirituality can all be accomplished with the right light fixtures placed in the right positions to create just the right feeling in the air.

We also pay very close attention to the many outdoor buildings that are commonly constructed as key elements to professional landscape services.  Exterior landscape lighting specialists carefully study the architecture of structures such as outdoor kitchens, pool houses, gazebos, and pergolas to devise custom, highly stylized ways of illuminating their interiors for nighttime human use.

Appropriate outdoor lighting will then be added to showcase the structure’s prominence as an outdoor architectural element.

Finally, feature lighting of ponds, streams, waterfalls, and fountains represents the final touch of our exterior landscape lighting plan process.  These elements require carefully positioned, and most often, concealed specialty lights that are water resistant and capable of turning the unique movements and properties of water into a full spectrum of special effects at night.
